Notch Asks Community For Permission To Monitor Player Data In Minecraft
Mojang's Notch is a clever man in the field of game design and management of his company's 20,000,000+ Minecraft players is a fantastic choice. The designer has posted a poll on his blog to find out whether his cuboid buddies would be comfortable with the company's collection of anonymous data from its players.
Currently, Mojang only monitors when a player logs into the game. Notch proposes to track "non-private" information, such as gameplay-session length and OS type, as well as whether you are playing in single or multi-player mode, and whether you are using the client or web applet. The community will then have access to the data gathered "as normal."
Notch stated that the information will be sent "naturally" anonymously. "So minecraft servers wouldn't contain any details about your session or user name, and it doesn't provide any sensitive information you might not want to divulge." To be perfectly honest, we're fairly surprised this kind of data wasn't already collected. If you're part of the Minecraft nation you can let your voice be heard by voting in favor or against anonymous data collection here.
